The Effect of Mass Incarceration on Criminality in Colombia

This study surveyed the literature on expected and unexpected effects of incarceration before (deterrence), during (incapacitation), after (after-effects) prison confinement occurs, through a selective search that favored analysis studies with an empirical focus in national comparative literature. Then, based data provided by National Penitentiary Prison Institute (INPEC its acronym Spanish) Police, research evaluated effect mass for homicides, kidnappings, theft, personal injuries had Colombian criminality between 1994 2018 (a time which inmate population increased fourfold). The regression results suggested decreased number homicides kidnappings but theft injuries. At end, article presents theoretical developments could explain those statistical makes recommendations strategic use imprisonment deterrent potential Colombia.
